Overview of How the Internet Works

There are at least 5 stages needed for the internet network to work properly. All these stages of course require the conditions mentioned above, starting from the ISP to HTTP. If one of them is disturbed, then the information data will not be able to connect.

Step 1 – ISP and Browser

We start with the first step of how the internet works, which requires an ISP to connect the computer to the internet.

ISP stands for Internet Service Protocolor telecommunications companies that sell internet services such as Indihome and Biznet, or wireless versions of GSM cards such as XL, Tri, IM3, and so on.

Each of these ISPs has a different speed. If in a car the speed unit is calculated using km/hour, then the internet has units of mb/s (megabytes per second).

Step 2 – DNS (Domain Name System)

Armed with a browser, we can begin to surf the internet by entering certain sites, for example, Google.com.

To be able to load a website page, DNS (Domain Name System) is needed, so that (for example) Google.com has an IP Address and can be accessed by us.

People may have a phone, but they won’t be able to connect if they don’t have service and a phone number.

Likewise with a website address, we can have a domain name (eg tedieka.com), but will not be accessible if you do not have an IP Address.

Step 3 – TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)

So far we have known that DNS is required to access a website through a browser

But the process doesn’t stop there, because in order for us to exchange messages between the destination website and our computer, TCP is needed.

TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol designed to ensure that the request and transmission of data over the internet network is successful.

The word ‘exchanging messages’ here does not only mean referring to ‘chatting’ activities. When you want to access a certain website, you can also call it exchanging data, because you request data on a particular website, then the website sends it.

Step 4 – HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)

If step 3 above is successful, then the internet network will start building HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) whose job is to present the documents we want, most of which are in the form of HTML.

In simple terms, the original form of all web pages (articles, news, blogs, etc.) html which must be transferred from the website to the website visitor.

All the information we ask for will then be sent directly to our computer – again – via TCP above in the form of a collection of bits.

From here, our internet speed and the website server we visit will be tested because the data will be transmitted via cable, moving from router to router, telephone line, and/or WiFi.

The smoother the travel process, the faster the information will reach our computer screen.

Step 5 – Browser
